Scripture:

1 Timothy 6:6: “Godliness with contentment is great gain.”

Proverbs 13:22: “A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children.”

Ephesians 1:8  I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,

Psalms 78:4 We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done.

Reflection:

An inheritance is what you leave “for” your children, a legacy is what you leave “in” your children. Leaving an inheritance has always been an important goal in my life. I pray that Proverbs 13:22 would be true in me; “A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children.” I am going to work hard, enjoy God’s favor and ask the Lord to bring an increase for their sake. I believe that is a Godly goal.

But more important than leaving the next generation personal keepsakes or money in a bank account, is that as parents, we leave a legacy of a Godly life lived for His glory. Legacy is created because it has been lived out in our lives.

To pass on a Godly legacy, it must be molded in us first. It is passed on to the next generation when it is revelation that has been activated in us. It’s like a flower that has fully bloomed and now the seeds are blown upon by the wind of the Holy Spirit so that it can be deposited into the good soil of the lives that are down wind from ours. Legacy requires good seed, a little wind and some good soil to become generational.

In Elenor Roosevelt’s memoirs dated April 26, 1945 she writes these words;

“They are not dead who live in lives they leave behind: In those whom they have blessed they live a life again.”

May the inheritance you share and the legacy you leave be one of abundance in Christ Jesus our Lord.
